Strength is not sport specific (god i hate that phrase) it is pattern (task) specfic. Strength in particular patterns are relatively independent of each other. For your chosen/ event you must develop strength in the patterns that are key to your performance. What are the patterns that you must be strong in for your sport ? Thats a whole other baby........
And yes I know I didnt even tell you what strength was yet? Cant give away all the good stuff yet...... But lets just say if you think it can always be measured quantitatively you should prob read another blog as this stuff is going to get airy fairy...
